Advanced Child Safety and First Aid
Preventing Emergencies:
– Conduct regular safety audits of the home environment – Secure furniture to walls to prevent tipping
– Keep emergency numbers easily accessible
– Teach children age-appropriate safety rules
Responding to Emergencies:
- Stay Calm: Your composure helps keep children calm 2. Assess the Situation: Check for immediate dangers
- Protect: Ensure the safety of all children present
- Get Help: Call emergency services if needed
- Provide Care: Administer appropriate first aid
Advanced First Aid Techniques:
- Bleeding Control:
– Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth
– Elevate the injured area if possible
– For severe bleeding, use pressure points
- Fractures and Sprains:
– Immobilize the injured area
– Apply cold packs to reduce swelling
– Don’t attempt to realign bones
- Choking:
– For conscious child: Perform Heimlich maneuver
– For infant: Back blows and chest thrusts
– For unconscious child: Begin CPR
- Burns:
– Cool the burn with cool (not cold) running water
– Cover with a clean, dry dressing
– Never apply butter, oil, or ice directly to a burn
- Head Injuries:
– Monitor for signs of concussion (confusion, vomiting, unequal pupils) – Apply cold pack for swelling
– Seek medical attention for any significant head injury
CPR Basics:
– Check for responsiveness
– Call for help
– Begin chest compressions (30 compressions, 2 breaths) – Continue until help arrives or the child starts breathing
5 things to do:
- Stay updated on first aid and CPR techniques
- Keep a well-stocked first aid kit easily accessible
- Practice emergency scenarios to stay prepared
- Teach children how to call for help in an emergency
- Document and report all incidents to parents and/or authorities as appropriate
5 things not to do:
- Don’t panic – it can escalate the situation
- Don’t move a seriously injured child unless they’re in immediate danger 3. Don’t give food or drink to an injured child (they may need surgery)
- Don’t try to remove objects embedded in wounds
- Don’t downplay or hide incidents from parents
